The United Kingdom bans the jammers used to steal cars

With these devices involved in a large share of car thefts in England and Wales, the British government banned possessing and distributing them, with penalties of up to five years in prison.

In the United Kingdom, vehicle theft using illegal electronic devices, such as signal jammers, has reached worrying levels. According to official statistics, these devices are involved in 40% of car thefts in England and Wales, and in London the share reaches 60%. In response, the British government banned their possession and distribution, with penalties of up to five years in prison and unlimited fines.

What these devices do

A signal jammer interferes with wireless communications, including a vehicle’s remote locking. Criminals use them so the owner cannot lock the car or to disable tracking systems, and so steal without leaving a trace.

The impact of vehicle theft

Having a vehicle stolen is not just a financial loss. It has an emotional and practical impact: many people depend on their car for work and family life. On top of that, the rise in these crimes drives up insurance costs and affects the safety of the whole community.

What changes with the new law

Before, the police could only prosecute criminals if they proved the device had been used in a specific crime. Under the new law, anyone who possesses, imports, manufactures or distributes this equipment can face penalties, and the accused has to prove the device has a legitimate use.

Law, industry and citizens

New laws are an important step, but their effect will depend on collaboration between the government, the auto industry and technology companies. It will also depend on public awareness: checking that the car is locked, keeping smart keys in signal-blocking pouches and choosing monitored parking makes a difference.

Chile took a similar step with Law 21.720, which since December 2024 has banned selling, carrying and using jammers.
